On Monday 12th November 2024, Pro-Khalistan held a violent protest outside the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Canada. The protest was in response to an event by the Indian Consulate aimed at helping elderly Indians with their pension certificates. Many attending this community event weren’t from a Hindu background, with many elderly Indian Sikhs in attendance. Pro-Khalistan protestors were videoed verbally abusing Hindu devotees driving into the Hindu Sabha Temple, holding signs with anti-Hindu imagery and swearing in Punjabi.
In response to growing tension and threats of harassment outside the temple, members of the Hindu community gathered to protect the site from the Khalistanis. Rather than diffusing tensions, social media content captured on the day shows the complicit role of the Brompton Regional Police in the escalation of violence against Hindus and the temple. Footage then shows police officers punching Hindus in the head and beating them back. The most disturbing footage shows three police officers using excessive force to restrain an unarmed Hindu teenager. In contrast to the brute force used against Hindus who had gathered to protect their temple, Pro-Khalistan groups were treated with leniency, prompting many Canadian Hindus to accuse the Police of anti-Hindu bias. Instead of stationing the protest at a distance from the temple, the police allowed Pro-Khalistani groups to gather directly at the temple gate.
An off duty police officer Harinder Sohi, was seen participating in the protest and was later suspended following public pressure.
