13 May 2026: Tushar Kumar was elected as the new Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood. Aged 23, Tushar is Britain’s youngest Hindu mayor. This role builds on Tushar’s experience of civic engagement; last year he was appointed as the Deputy Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood. Tushar’s initial steps with political engagement took place at King’s College London where Tushar was a student of Political Science and took part in the institution’s Civic Leadership Academy and the University Officers’ Training Corps. Describing his experience, Tushar said “My time at King’s has played a significant role in shaping my values and commitment to public service and I hope my story might inspire other students to see leadership and local impact as paths worth pursuing”.
Making this a more momentous occasion is the election of Tushar’s mother, Councillor Parveen Rani, as the first Hindu Mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council.
