Saturday 23rd March 2024: 3,000 people attended a Holi celebration in the grounds of Corfe Castle in Dorset. The event was organised by the Bournemouth Poole Christchurch Indian Community group in collaboration with the National Trust; a charity that supports places of natural and historic beauty across Britain. Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Corfe Castle is now the first National Trust site to host a Hindu festival. Natural plant-based coloured powders were used for the playing of Holi. In addition to being gluten free, these environmentally friendly colours do not leave permanent stains.
The event welcomed all people, including many from non-Hindu backgrounds. Anjali Mavi explains how the site was intentionally chosen to welcome people of all communitie to enjoy Holi: “Having it at the National Trust is extra special because it means we’re reaching out to a wider and diverse audience, including people who might not usually visit. It’s all about bringing different communities together and celebrating diversity.”
