The appearance of Rama; one of the most popular avatars of Vishnu is observed today (Chaitra Shukla Navami). As Rama, Vishnu set the example of ideal human values. Unlike other avatars, where Vishnu displayed his superhuman traits, Rama lived as a man experiencing a life of emotional conflicts, psychological upheaval and personal tragedies. And despite facing so much personal turmoil, Rama lived a life committed to honesty, duty and serving others. Rama’s life and exploits are contained the epic Ramayana, one of most important texts of Hinduism. The Ramayana has inspired generations of Hindus on how to live a life of honesty and virtue. The messages of this text has shaped the pysche of not only Hindus but also of followers of other Dharmic traditions across Bharat and East Asia.
The day of Ram Navami is marked with fasting, processions and special pujas, particularly at midday when the birth of Rama took place. The festival can last up to 9 days with the Ramayana being recited from start to finish, where parts of the epic are ritually re-enacted, such as the Janmotsav (birth ceremony), Kalyanam (wedding of Sita and Rama) and Pattabhishekam (coronation). Rama Navami is also saceed for Shakti worship, making the culmination of Vasanta Navaratri and also the appearance day of Parvati.
Rama Navami 2024 is of extra significance to Hindus across the globe. On 22nd of January, the shrine marking the birthplace of Rama in Ayodhya was consecrated after nearly 500 years following the desecration of the original temple and occupation by invaders.
