Janmashtami 2024

Krishna is one of the incarnations of Vishnu, embodying the most playful aspects of the absolute Brahman (Lila Purshottam). A highly complex character, Krishna appeals to different types of spiritual seekers who approach him as an adorable child, a romantic youth, a mighty warrior, an astute statesman or a guru of yogic practice. Though its primary focus is Moksha (liberation), Krishna teachings have for centuries inspired Hindu civilisations in the fields of politics, warfare, nation-building, relationships, philosophy, aesthetics and the arts. Known either as Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, Sri Jayanti or Ashtami-Rohini, the appearance day of Krishna is observed during the Hindu lunar month Shravan/Bhadrapad or the solar month Simha.

About the image: Radha and Krishna Deities at the Shri Kantaji Temple at Dinajpur in the Rangpur Division Bangladesh. Built in the 18th Century, by a local aristocratic Hindu family, the temple is built in terracotta bricks. The Kantaji temple is one the finest examples of the Navaranta style of Hindu temple architecture that is native to Bangladesh. This is one of few historic Hindu temples that remain active in Bangladesh where Hindus and their places of worship have been experiencing decades of attacks. The 5th of August 2024 was the latest wave of attacks on Bangladeshi Hindus.
