In July 2024, Laos and India jointly released a postage stamp featuring the image of Shri Ramlala from Ayodhya. This deity was installed at the Ramajanmabhoomi’s temple on 22nd January 2024. The unveiling took place during India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar’s visit to Laos for a meeting with ASEAN (political and economic union of 10 countries in South Eastasia). The set of 2 stamps celebrates the cultural heritage of Laos and India. In addition to the image of Ram, the other stamp depicts Buddha from Luang Prabang (Lao’s ancient capital).
The release of the stamp highlights the influence and importance of Hinduism in Southeast Asia. Across the region, the Ramayana holds significance; countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia each have their own versions of the Ramayana.
In Laos, the Ramayana is known as Phra Lak Phra Lam and plays a central role in the country’s cultural identity. The Ramayana is brought to life during auspicious occasions, celebrated through mural paintings, and integrated into festivals. This shared reverence for Rama across Southeast Asia, particularly in Laos, is reflected in their celebration of the rebuilding of the Ramjanmabhoomi temple at Rama’s place of birth.
